Cancer directly or indirectly affects a considerable part of the Cuban population and it is a constant priority in the national health system because it one of the main causes of death in the country.
Although there is no absolute panacea, Cuba carries out several actions, as for instance in Pinar del Rio province, which increases life expectancy of the patients.
“We can prevent it and the possibilities to cure it are greater when they are treated as soon as possible,” Fe Mercedes Perez Gonzalez, provincial coordinator for the control of cancer said, who also gave us more information. “This is the fourth Cuban province that includes patients in the clinical trials. They turn into an alternative to fight the illness. Any patient, if agreed and depending on the evaluation of its evolution in the disease, has the possibility to be registered in these studies, thanks to this, they are immunized with vaccines, right now, between 110 and 120 patients in Vueltabajo locality. The goal of the therapy for immunization is that the illness will not reappear, explained Rosa Maria Amador Gonzalez, Oncology and Radiology Specialist from the Provincial Oncology Unit.
About 16 studies are related, among others lung, prostate and stomach cancers and all of them with advance disease, as well as several locations more. The results have shown an increase in life expectancy of the patients, as in the case of the clinical trial son lungs which were already closed with a registration of six months between those who had received the vaccine and those who have not.
This has benefited the patients because the treatment is more specialized and individual, Amador Gonzalez said.
Pinar del Rio province, following the orientations of the top organisms, has traced its own strategies for the performance according to the characteristics of the territory. They start facing this disease from the basic team of health: family nurse and doctor. In this area, the early diagnose gives great possibilities to win life; besides it is an indispensible step to lead the patient to the health system up to the secondary assistance, where he will receive the specific treatment.
“Some of our centers carry out the oncologic-specific treatment, that is, the chemotherapy and radio therapy at the Oncology Unit and Tercer Congreso Hospital, besides Abel Santamaria and Leon Cuervo Rubio hospitals also in charged to oncology surgery, mainly for the different localities,” Perez Gonzalez said.
He added they are promoting the primary surveillance in relation to the knowledge and tools to an active investigation in the different localities. The fact is to contribute in the early diagnose and take the necessary measures in the secondary assistance, and now with the inclusion of the trails, which have overturned in therapy.
The advances experienced in Pinar del Rio have increase life expectancy of those fighting this illness. Cancer, although it is still a mortal enemy, does not hang in the air for its respect in Cuba. The health system applies the scientific advances, together with the early and proper diagnose and individual treatment, as weapons to win the battle of all.
