The Special Development Zone in Mariel opens the possibilities for foreign currency. This was explained by Rodrigo Malmierca, Minister of Foreign Commerce and Investment in the opening of the XXXI Edition of the International Fair of Havana (FIHAV) 2013 in Expocuba.

After Malmierca welcomed the representatives from 65 countries attending the exposition fair that covers 18,000 square meters, and is 20 percent better than the previous one, he informed on the economic situation of Cuba and the efforts are been carried out for the economic and social development.

He said we will keep on with the implementation of the guidelines of the VI Congress of the Cuban Communist Party that will progressively lead us to the realization of the Cuban economic model, to reinforce socialism and the planning; which is the corner stone of the economic activity. It also includes the recognition and promotion of non-state formulas of procedures for property like cooperatives and self employment.

He added that the agriculture cooperatives are today a reality, there have been founded 113 and we continue with the handing over of idle state lands in usufruct (the number exceeds 1, 500,000 hectares) and we have passed important policies like the one of credits, the one of currency and the taxes. They will allow to work on the basis of the economic and social development until 2030.

The Cuban economy keeps its 3 percent vitality and has increased in the last 18 months, in spite the global economic crisis, the adverse weather changes and the cruel blockade by the United States, he said.

We are working in view to the foreign investment, and we will have some projects that will help the identification of serious partners who are interested in getting in contact with Cuban enterprises in search for mutual benefits.

He announced that the Special Development Zone of Mariel which covers 465,4 square kilometres should be inaugurated on January 2014. In there, they are promoting the economic and environmental development by foreign investment, specially the one contributing to technological innovation and the procedures.

“We hope this zone will promote the exportations, the effective substitution of importations and the generation of jobs, constantly linked to the international market and the international economy.”

He informed that one of the advantages of the zone is that is close to Mariel Port, where they are finishing a great investment with the funding of the Brazilian government.

It will have a wide infrastructure: a station of modern containers in the bay with deep waters for big vessels, expressways, railroads, quick connexion with several airports, electric, water and telecommunication nets.

Ricardo Cabrisas, together with Division Genral Antonio Luson Batle, both deputy presidents of the Council of Ministers, cut the ribbon that opened the doors to FIHAV 2013, attending countries from the Community of Latin American States (CELAC) and delegations of top level from Venezuela, China, Russia, Spain and Canada, main economic and commercial partners of Cuba.

On Sunday, it will be inaugurated a park with photo voltaic energy of 1 MW, the government of China donated to Expocuba.
