On the occasion of May Day, International Workers’ Day, the Workers’ Central Union of Cuba (CTC) in the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud organized an intergenerational meeting of union leaders from the 14 unions that exist there, presided over by Yusmari Olivera Pupo, the top union leader.

During the exchange, the performance of men and women who have been in charge of leadership structures, both in the grassroots organizations of the collectives and at the territorial level, where they promote tasks of food production, savings and import substitution, was praised.

The event began with the reading of the Concept of Revolution, given by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, a few days before the 25th anniversary of his historic speech, essential for all Cubans.

Revolution is a sense of the historical moment; it is changing everything that needs to be changed; it is full equality and freedom; it is being treated and treating others as human beings; it is emancipating ourselves by ourselves and by our own efforts; it is challenging powerful dominant forces inside and outside the social and national spheres; It is defending the values we believe in at the price of any sacrifice; it is humility, selflessness, altruism, solidarity and heroism; it is fighting with boldness, intelligence and realism; it is never lying or violating ethical principles; it is a deep conviction that there is no force in the world capable of crushing the power of truth and ideas. Revolution is unity, it is independence, it is fighting for our dreams of justice for Cuba and for the world, which is the basis of our patriotism, our socialism and our internationalism.

In a pleasant afternoon, several of those present expressed what each word of that document means today, translated into working with efficiency, quality and the awareness that our duty is to dedicate ourselves to our work as faithful revolutionaries.

It has been said that the rereading of this concept in the face of May Day 2020 is reason enough to commit ourselves to promoting the country’s economic development, because we have a million reasons to defend the Revolution that has given us everything and that has placed Cuba on the international stage because of its prestige.

There was no shortage of commitments from the trade union structures to turn the complex economic scenario facing the country today into productive triumphs, materializing in practical achievements of efficiency, productivity, savings and quality in every workplace.

We are even more conscious of the responsibility of the working class in generating the wealth demanded by our people to satisfy their needs and the only feasible way to increase the real income of the workers.

Some of the participants highlighted the joy that already reigns in the centres prior to May Day, a celebration that will be marked by patriotism, joy and individual and collective recognition of the experiences of the vanguard, as well as by the contribution of the workers to the process of updating the social and economic model that we have sovereignly decided to continue building, following the example and teachings of workers’ leaders such as Lázaro Peña González, Jesús Menéndez Larrondo, José María Pérez and Alfredo López, among others.

There was support to show solidarity with the trade union organizations around the world that are struggling to defend the real rights of the workers in the face of the hegemonic power of the employers and the pervasive exploitation of the capitalist regime and its neoliberal policies.

He closed the meeting with a dance, but not before affirming that this May Day we will give another powerful demonstration of Cuba’s indestructible unity.
