With 30 percent of the country’s fish catch, an exponential growth in fish farming and industrial production, Empresa Pesquera Sancti Spíritus (PESCASPIR) was crowned the most comprehensive company in this sector in Cuba in 2024 and the venue of the central activities for April 8, Workers’ Day in this sector.

It was also the most efficient company in terms of tons caught, a result that is due to the advantage of having the largest reservoir in the country, the Zaza Dam, only seven kilometers from the industry, but also to the contributions of an innovative and intelligent group dedicated to the development of aquaculture.
At the end of last year, PESCASPIR made a quantitative leap in its production management, producing more than 40 million fingerlings and catching about 3,007 tons of fish, which were transformed into more than 2,100 tons of food.
«It is true that the population does not see fish as such, because we are only aquaculture, we do not fish on the platform. Since 2021, the intensive farming of catfish and tilapia has been paralyzed due to the impossibility of acquiring feed for fattening abroad, so we have lost the supply of fillets of these species, but we sell a wide range of assortments from our catches,» explained Erich Pérez Márquez, general manager of the company.
The Entity’s products – croquettes, a wide range of sausages and minced meat – reach the Spiritan population through social consumption, the Family Assistance System, medical diets and retail sales through 16 specialized stands spread throughout the eight municipalities of the province.

«In recognition of this efficient management, PESCASPIR deserves the status of National Vanguard, granted by the National Secretariat of the Cuban Workers’ Central (CTC), and will celebrate the national activities for the Workers’ Day of the Fishing Industry,» said Ana Rosa Pajón Díaz, secretary of this union in the territory of Sancti Spíritus.
The celebration will take place from April 1 to 8 and will include sporting events, fishing and processing competitions, volunteer work, revivals and inaugurations, visits to historical sites and meetings between young people from all over the country.
In the areas of the INDUPIR Base Business Unit, the national event will be held on the 8th itself, a moment to recognize the performance of outstanding entities and workers.
