Human relations in the workplace are just as important as health and safety standards, because a healthy environment of camaraderie and respect undoubtedly stimulates productivity and creativity and strengthens the collective.
A simple good morning, how are you, accompanied by a smile or a pleasant gesture, costs nothing and is better than wearing a sullen face and a frown; nor is it in good taste to whisper and make ill-intentioned comments that end up as gossip, whether the focus is on a manager or any other employee.
The «hot» jokes, the jokes at the expense of physical defects, are often screens behind which hide behaviors ranging from sexual harassment to discrimination, and often the collective joins the joke that occurred to the «funny».
Unless someone tells you that they prefer to be called by that name, do not use nicknames. They can make you uncomfortable and should be reserved for people with a stronger emotional bond.
Avoid indiscreet questions about your colleagues’ family, love and financial lives; everyone will comment on what he or she wants to make public, and what he or she hears should be kept to himself or herself.
There are spaces for questioning procedures and decisions that affect everyone. If they are not provided, demand them up to the necessary authority; reveal the criteria and submit them to debate, do not feed rumors that can crush you.
Fulfill your duties, contribute to the collective success, be supportive but not invasive; professional ties manage to transcend this context, and even if they do not, nothing prevents respect from distinguishing relationships.
Those who share the same workplace do not necessarily have to be friends or fraternizers outside of it, but the elementary rules of courtesy – not to be confused with hypocrisy – make it possible for cordiality to become a pillar of well-being.
If we are in a pleasant environment that favors the optimal use of our abilities, it is something that does not require financial or material resources. However, it can contribute to both.
