With the capture of approximately 3,000 tons of fish in 2024, of which more than 230 tons will exceed its annual commitment, the Empresa Pesquera Sancti Spíritus, PESCASPIR, will regain its productive rhythm and consolidate its position as a leader in aquaculture in the country.

With this figure, Sancti Spíritus’s aquaculture farmers produced about 500 tons more than the previous year, and the Unidad Empresarial de Base (UEB) ACUIZA, which is responsible for fishing, regained its productive potential, which had been elusive since 2017.

Yoandy Rodríguez Panizo, director of the aforementioned UEB, refers to the cooperative management between all the structures of PESCASPIR as an essential element in the consolidation of the results, with a first link to the work of the Fry Fishing Center, a collective that for two consecutive years has achieved a production of almost 40 million fry, essential for the restocking of the reservoirs of the province.

As part of the preparation to increase the catch and ensure its stability, 20 million fry have been deposited in the Zaza dam alone, from which about 90 percent of the fish processed by the industry is taken, the executive said.

With the same intention, the collective fishing has been strengthened, the involvement of the diver in the tasks and the schedules have been adapted according to the expertise of the fishermen, who know the manifestation of the shoals and the meteorological conditions, said Rodríguez Panizo.

He added that a new brigade was formed, called 26 Julio in commemoration of the Moncada anniversary, a new boat was salvaged, three «chinchorros» were built, and fishing gear and navigation equipment were repaired.

Rodríguez Panizo highlighted the efforts of the 81 fishermen, organized in 15 brigades, who worked hard during the period of maximum biomass and also in the last months of the year, when winter conditions make freshwater fishing difficult.

The fish farmers are involved in arduous days both during the period of maximum biomass manifestation and in the last months of the year when winter conditions make fishing difficult.

The increase in catches is proportionally reflected in the growth of industrial production, products that, although they do not meet the demand due to the lack of equivalent offers in terms of assortment and affordable prices, reach the population through state orders and sales in the company’s own network of specialized shops.
