Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez saw an intense work agenda in the capital this Wednesday, May 23, covering important issues such as the justice system, food production and Cuban culture.
His activities began with the inaugural session of the 9th International Justice and Law Meeting 2018, in Havana’s International Conference Center. He then attended the Cuba 2.0 International Food Fair, in the Pabexpo fairgrounds; before concluding in the late afternoon at the Plaza 31 y 2 Cultural Center, Plaza de la Revolución municipality, where he held an emotive meeting with artists who participated in the Peoples’ Summit, in Peru, and the Artes de Cuba Festival, at Washington’s Kennedy Center.
INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE AND LAW MEETING
The event running May 23 through 25, sees the participation of more than a hundred delegates and guests from 27 nations, in addition to 315 Cubans, including the best law students of seven universities of the country.
Convened by the People’s Supreme Court of Cuba, under the auspices of the National Union of Cuban Jurists and the University of Havana’s Law Faculty, the meeting has become a prestigious national and international event.
With a broad and diverse scientific program, Cuba is ready to share its knowledge and to hear about new experiences, in the midst of its process of updating its economic and social model, noted the President of the People’s Supreme Court, Rubén Remigio Ferro, on opening the event.
A VERY TIMELY FAIR
Later, the President of the Councils of State and Ministers visited the second edition of the International Food, Beverages and Food Technology Fair, Cuba 2.0, running at the Pabexpo fairgrounds since May 22. The event sees the participation of 115 exhibitors from 22 nations, of which, some 25 are exclusively dedicated to producing equipment for the food industry.
Accompanied by the Minister of the sector, María del Carmen Concepción González, Díaz-Canel toured several of the stands and spoke with Cuban and foreign businesspeople regarding efforts to boost food production in the country.
The Fair includes several business meetings, an investment forum, the presentation of the Portfolio of Foreign Investment Opportunities in the food industry, as well as spaces for the exchange of knowledge and experiences.
In statements to the press, the Cuban President noted: “The Fair is very timely because we are at a moment when we want to relaunch, modernize and strengthen the Cuban food industry.”
He also emphasized the efforts to launch new products and expand production, in order to meet the food demands of the population.
CUBAN CULTURE IS OUR BEST AMBASSADOR
Later in the afternoon, the Cuban President held an emotive meeting with artists who participated in the Peoples’ Summit, held in April of this year in Peru, and the Artes de Cuba Festival, at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, throughout May; two spaces in which it was demonstrated that culture is the best ambassador of the Caribbean island.
In the impressive Plaza 31 y 2 Cultural Center, located in the Timba neighborhood, in the Havana municipality of Plaza de la Revolución, the exchange saw artists express their gratitude, and note their experiences, the excellent response from audiences, and the pride of representing Cuba in these international events.
Regarding the Kennedy Center exhibitions and performances, it was noted that more than 200 Cuban artists participated, that preparations for this colossal event had taken two years; that shows were sold-out; and that the organization and attention of this prestigious U.S. institution had been a unique experience.
Meanwhile, the difficult political context of the Peoples’ Summit in Peru was recalled, where Cuban artists defended the island’s sovereignty and their commitment to the Revolution.
Díaz-Canel noted that at both events, Cuban artists presented themselves in a creative and committed way, a result of the island’s effective arts education system.
These spaces of communication between peoples show that despite ideological differences, we can build bridges with respect, he stressed. The President also called for a festival on the island, to allow these artists to come together and present their work to Cuban audiences, a proposal met with enthusiasm from those present.
