The contribution of youth to the socioeconomic development of Cuba, the updating of the island’s model, its social achievements and scientific development, are some of the themes to be discussed in the “Thinking the Americas” Youth Forum, which will take place this Friday, March 23, at the University of Havana, as part of activities in the lead up to the 8th Summit of the Americas, organizers confirmed.
More than 400 representatives from different sectors of society will participate in the Forum – convened by student organizations and youth movements – which will see three panel discussions in which experts and professors will also participate, to address issues related to democracy, citizen participation and human rights, with a view to the Forum of Civil Society and Social Actors of the upcoming regional Summit, to be held in Peru in April.
The First Secretary of the Young Communist League (UJC) National Committee, Susely Morfa, speaking to ACN, stressed the importance of this space as a reflection of the participation of younger generations in all the tasks of the Cuban socialist system and an opportunity to discuss crucial issues, including human rights and how to contribute to a more just and equitable world.
Gisleidy Sosa, head of the UJC International Relations Department, highlighted the validity of the ideals of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, which will characterize the debates. The Forum will begin with a tribute to the student leader and founder of the Federation of University Students, Julio Antonio Mella.
As reported, the event will conclude with the reading of a final declaration, which will serve as a guide and precedent to the positions that Cuban youth participating in the 8th Summit of the Americas will defend, as part of Cuban civil society, which brings together more than 2,000 organizations and associations involved in practically all branches of the political, social, economic, cultural and religious life of the country.
