Santiago, Chile, (Prensa Latina).- Cuba’s First Vice President, Miguel Díaz-Canel, said today that relations between his country and Chile have historic roots and hoped they will get a new boost under President Michelle Bachelet.
Díaz-Canel, who attended the inauguration ceremony of Bachelet yesterday, laid wreaths at the mausoleums of late President Salvador Allende and Communist leader Gladys Marin in the general cemetery of this capital.
Two friends of Cuba’s, to unforgettable figures, we could not fail to pay this tribute that ennoble the solid links between our peoples, said the Cuban official.
In remarks to Prensa Latina, he referred to good prospects with Bachelet at the helm of Chile.
A new time with better conditions to broaden economic, commercial and political relations, he said.
He described the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) as a bright opportunity for unity from diversity. In two years of operation, first with Chile as president and later with Cuba, steps have been taken to strengthen integration, he noted.
The Cuban official was accompanied by Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra and Ambassador to Chile, Adolfo Curbelo.
