celac-cumbreiirecintoHavana,Prensa Latina.- The extended Troika of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), comprising Chile, Cuba, Costa Rica, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, is meeting today prior to the 2nd Summit of that regional integration mechanism. The closed session precedes the meeting of national experts on Jan. 25-26, to conform the documents to be discussed during the event of heads of State and Government. The meeting of foreign ministers will be held on Jan. 27.

The main slogan of the summit will be the struggle against hunger, poverty and inequality, and will seek declaring the region as a zone for peace and free of nuclear weapons, Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Abelardo Moreno stated.

A political declaration draft and an action plan for 2014 are currently under remote discussion.

The press center of the Summit from where hundreds of journalists of dozen media will cover the event will be opened today.

The summit will begin on Jan. 28-29 at Pabexpo fairgrounds in Havana.

CELAC, founded in Caracas in 2011, is considered as the most important institutional event of the region. Its first summit was held in Santiago de Chile, where Cuba assumed the pro tempore presidency that will be handed over this year to Costa Rica.
