We coexist with perverse entities. The oldest and cruelest of them all is the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States government against Cuba.
Their close associates, a.k.a. deep distortions, persist in the labor and social scene, despite the energy crisis, climate change, hurricanes and other rampant issues.
Other notable problems, such as power outages and fuel shortages, hinder the urgent mission to stimulate the national economy and alleviate the situation of families.
One of these distortions lives in my community. Because of the abrupt shutdown of the National Electric System on November 6 of this year, due to Hurricane Rafael, the generator near my house was not activated for lack of a battery, which cut off water service to the neighborhood known as La Yuca for more than 30 hours.
This may seem small in the face of major problems, such as the non-compliance with 73 physical indicators of the economic plan from January to date, most of them related to food production in Ciego de Avila, where the non-payment to farmers amounts to 9 million 200 thousand pesos. The debt exceeded 211 million months ago.
Without regionalism, I also take evidence from the municipality of Ciro Redondo, my hometown, for its impact on the local and national economy. Incidentally, the factory of the same name – the most modern in Cuba – will be the only active industry in the coming sugar harvest.
This could be the good news we have been waiting for. The harvest, due to its short duration, will depend not only on integral efficiency, but also on the supreme commitment with the people, witness of the frustration of four consecutive contests, one of the reasons why, since last July, only two pounds of raw sugar per capita per month are distributed for the basic family basket of goods.
The agro-industrial sugar company Ciro Redondo had projected profits of more than 42 million pesos and has so far recorded economic losses of 17 million pesos. In addition to the losses in sweet grains, the plans for sugarcane derivatives are not being met.
The nearby bioelectric plant, its energetic heart, has failed the entity, which together with the planting of only 24% of sugar cane in the province of Ciego de Avila, are some of the most persistent distortions to be faced with more rigor.
