One of the most debated topics in relation to the functioning of the union and the union sections is their mission to achieve greater economic efficiency. If we take into account that it is in the factories, workshops and industries where the productive process takes place, it is obvious that the most important part of union work is at the base, where person-to-person work must prevail.

The consequences left by Covid-19 in the stability and operation of many workplaces, and especially in the union work, require the strengthening of union work and,  particularly, of the assemblies of affiliates. This effort involves training to achieve stability and encourage the rescue of the role of the Union in its relations with workers.

The members’ assemblies shall discuss production and service plans on an objective basis, the fulfillment of the investment schedule, how import substitution is promoted in each plant, as well as the participation of workers in a greater and better organization of work.

Only in this way, as CTC Secretary General Ulises Guilarte De Nacimiento stated, will it be possible to defeat inertia and improvisation and make creative initiative prevail in the labor collectives, which he described as the main scenarios of the upcoming 22nd CTC Congress.

In complex times like the ones we live in, it is necessary to eliminate formalism and improvisation in union operations. To achieve this, it is crucial to include young people in union leaderships, since they have the potential to motivate collectives and stimulate love for work.

Today more than ever, Martí‘s words become relevant: «To create is the pass word of this generation. The wine, banana wine; and if it comes out sour, it is our wine! It is precisely the young people who are the standard-bearers, the creators, the forgers of the new America. Foreign molds should not be imitated; the solution must come from the entrails of our America».
