Army General Raúl Castro Ruz laid flowers before the graves of Cuba’s national hero José Martí and Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro Ruz, in Santiago de Cuba’s Santa Ifigenia Cemetery, accompanied by provincial Party secretary Lázaro Expósito Canto.
Early on the morning of August 13, Raúl visited the monument at Las Coloradas where the Granma expedition landed December 2, 1956. This tribute took place 60 years, eight months, and 11 days after the birth of the Rebel Army which under Fidel’s command was able to regroup following the setback at Alegría de Pío with the support of local campesinos and the July 26 Movement, extend the insurrection to other regions, and defeat the Batista dictatorship’s forces, despite their superiority in troops and weaponry.
