Two Cuban towns are benefitted by a health and sanitation education project for children in collaboration with UNICEF, UN agency representative, Maria Machicado, said.

The experience takes place in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba and in the Havana area of La Timba. The aim is to use schools as health promotion centers and community participation, the official told Prensa Latina during the International Convention, Cubagua 2017. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is promoting the initiative as part of the country’s effort to increase the resilience of families and communities to extreme events such as hurricanes and prolonged rainfall, she noted.

The frequent hand wash and water saving at home are the issues of teaching children, who are usually good agents of change, said the expert, who recalled the particular help to Santiago de Cuba after Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

UNICEF has now identified similar needs in eastern Guantanamo province due to the lashing of Hurricane Matthew and hopes to channel resources for the rehabilitation of water sources and other emergencies through a funding from Russia, she said.

According to the expert, the experience on health and environmental education is on the right track and should serve to extend the practice to other municipalities. (Taken from Prensa Latina)
