Sugarcane Under the Sword of Damocles

Judging by the current situation, the dangers that hang like a sword of Damocles over the sustainability of agro-sugar production in the province of Las Tunas, one of the areas with the greatest potential in this essential activity for the nation, are real.

Sugarcane plantations are declining at an accelerated rate as a result of repeated noncompliance with planting plans and cultural attention to these crops, which is affected by the well-known limitations of resources and inputs, but there are also subjective obstacles.

Here are some manifestations: most of the workers are unaware of the 93 measures approved to save the sugar industry, and there is resistance to the creation of work collectives whose objectives are efficiency and the improvement of wage income in line with results.

Also in these days the persistent rains are causing damage to the plowed areas without the seeds deposited, to which attention must be returned and it is urgent to change this strategy and go furrowing and planting.

The combination of these factors jeopardizes the future of this activity in a province that still has four mills with the potential to produce sugar and ensure the production of sugar derivatives.

In the last spring planting season, only 38% of the plan was planted, and the current rhythm of the cold planting season, in which the sector is immersed, is also not meeting the targets.

During the period December 2020-June 2024, the decline in sugarcane production amounted to more than 33 thousand hectares (ha), which represents 48% of the land allocated to these plantations, which extends to 96 thousand 902.1 ha, and already total more than 55 thousand ha empty, 58% of the land allocated to this crop.

At that time, all local agro-industrial sugar companies showed an unfavorable situation, as Colombia decreased by 78%, Amancio (66%), Antonio Guiteras (41%) and Majibacoa (50%).

Without ignoring the challenges posed by the lack of fuel, lubricants, tires, batteries and other resources in the use of agricultural mechanization, it is possible to do more.

This is the thinking of the highest authorities of the Party and the Government in the province, and together with the AzCuba group, the union and the workers are looking for alternatives to change the situation.
