Two important documents directed toward continuing to improve ties between Cuba and Spain, marked by strong historical, family, and cultural ties, were signed November 22, on the occasion of the visit to Cuba by Spanish President Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón, who was received in the Council of State’s Revolution Hall by the President of our Councils of State and Ministers, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.
The first of these was a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of bilateral consultation between the Republic of Cuba and the Kingdom of Spain, which will include an institutional framework for the two states and contribute to the expansion and deepening of relations, along with procedures to address matters of common interest regarding bilateral relations and issues on the regional and multilateral agenda. In the presence of both heads of state, the agreement was signed by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, and Josep Borell Fontelles, Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.
The other text was a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of cultural cooperation between Cuba’s Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain, which seeks to lay the foundations for the development of collaborative cultural activities that will be organized and promoted by both parties.
The signatories of these protocols stated that political-diplomatic relations between the two nations are functioning in a positive manner and demonstrate that it is possible to civilly coexist, cooperate, and work together to face common challenges.
Before the official talks and signing ceremony, the Spanish President paid tribute to José Martí, by placing a wreath at the base of his memorial in the Plaza de la Revolución.
Pedro Sánchez arrived in Cuba on November 22 and was received by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Rogelio Sierra Díaz, on the tarmac at José Martí International Airport.
The distinguished guest, who is the first Spanish President to visit Cuba in 32 years, completed a busy agenda, which included a business forum held at the Iberostar Grand Packard hotel and a tour of Old Havana’s central historic district. (Taken from en.granma.cu)
