During a meeting presided by Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, First Secretary of the Party Central Committee, a working group was established to prepare proposals to create an institution for the preservation of documentary heritage and the study and dissemination of the thought and work of Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro Ruz.

Some thirty experts from different specialties and representatives of various agencies, entities and institutions were called on to complete this challenging task, described by Raúl as of the utmost importance and which will be followed by the country’s leadership.

As explained by the First Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, in charge of overseeing the fulfillment of this task, the aim is to gather together and disseminate in an institution the valuable information that over the years has been collected on the activities of the Comandante en Jefe throughout his life, and that are part of the historical memory of the nation.

To this end, Presidential Decree No. 21 was announced, outlining the creation of the group of compañeros who will elaborate the ideas for the establishment of the aforementioned institution, presided by Alberto Alvariño Atiénzar, who on reporting on their work agenda, noted on behalf of all those present that they were assuming a historic task, of great political responsibility and to which they would completely devote themselves.

The Presidential Decree specifies that the proposals to be submitted should, among other matters, define the conceptual bases, principles, mission, functions and structure of the institution.

The decision is in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 123, of December 27, 2016, on the use of the name and figure of Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro Ruz, regarding the future naming of any institution that is created for the study of his invaluable contribution to the history of the nation.
