Cuban Vice President Jose Ramon Machado Ventura has praised the preparations for the tobacco campaign in this western province, the country’s largest tobacco producer, where 18,000 hectares have been devoted to that crop.

The second secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba(PCC) visited tobacco areas in the municipality of Consolacion del Sur, where the Virginia project, aimed at supplying Virginia tobacco to the national tobacco industry, is making progress.

He described the state of tobacco plantations and the progress in sowing, which has already surpassed 15,000 hectares in the province, as positive.

The vice president also visited areas devoted to food production in areas of that territory and in the municipality of Pinar del Rio, which had agricultural splendor some years ago and have been currently identified as territorial production regions.

During his visit, Machado Ventura met with peasants and instructed them to turn into charcoal, an important source of income for the country, all invasive plants that have affected these regions for years.

Agriculture currently has the necessary equipment to increase yield and improve quality, hence the importance of diversifying crops to raise production, the member of the PCC Political Bureau said at the end of his visit to Pinar del Rio. (Taken from Prensa Latina)
