Santiago de Cuba, between Earthquakes and an Atmospheric Threat

In the face of the incredulity of many people, the 46th report from the National Seismic Services clarified the doubt: a 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook eastern Cuba while people’s attention was focused on Hurricane Matthew.

So, once again, nature puts the inhabitants in this eastern region to the test and forces them to be prepared for any of its caprices, either in the center of the earth or in the layers of the atmosphere. In order to keep people updated on Sunday morning, the news program ‘En linea contigo’ (On Line with You) will be broadcast on two television channels. Authorities will explain the details of preparations, due to the imminent passage of the hurricane as of Monday night.

Given the suspicious calm on Saturday, families are taking precautions at home and the members of the Provincial Defense Council are making the necessary decisions to ensure the preservation of human lives and material resources.

With enough time and serenity, actions aimed at supplying food, preparing shelters for the people who will be evacuated to safer places, cleaning roads, basins and culverts, health services and other precautions are being taken.

Local authorities are paying particular attention to river flows, dams and the areas of the coastline that may be flooded. (Taken from Prensa Latina)
