More than 1,400,000 students have been graduated from the Cuban universities from 1959 to date, showing the island’s steady progress in education, authorities in the sector said today.
Before 1959, about 30 percent of the Cuban population was illiterate and 60 percent were semi-illiterate, the rector recalled.
During the graduation yesterday of more than 1,500 young people from the university, Alonso stressed that everything achieved in education has been possible thanks to the guidance of Fidel Castro. He gave culture to Cubans and as a result made them free.
Alonso urged the new engineers and architects, totaling nearly 60,000 graduates to practice their professions with clear principles and comply with the ideals of justice encouraged by the national education system. (Taken from Prensa Latina News Agency)
