The Caribbean inside Garcia Marquez

The intense Caribbean eroticism, its smell to salt residue and woodland, its people tanned by the Sun and the lack of inhibitions have been part of the raw material of one of the most read Latin American writers: Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Casa de las Americas intends to reveal some of the Caribbean influences in Gabo’s work from November 14 t0 15, which will devote to the Literature Nobel Prize, some activities to homage him with expositions, workshops and screening of audio visuals.

Gustavo Adolfo Bell, Colombian ambassador in Cuba said the program will include an exposition with illustrations based on works from the novelist where the Caribbean is present in the literary universe of the author of El amor en los tiempos del colera.

In that date, Casa de las Americas will be full of yellow butterflies that will reveal the presence of Mauricio Babilonia, a character from Cien años de soledad, a text that had become an icon of the boom in the Latin American literature from the XX century and that was written by Gabo almost half a century ago.

It is also expected the presence of Conrado Zuluaga, Colombian professor and essayist with a well known prestige for his studies about the life and work of Garcia Marquez.

Those who prefer the audio visuals will be able to enjoy this time of “all” the audio visuals devoted to the author, as the Colombian diplomat said to the press.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a friend of Cuba and Casa de las Americas, an institution that every year organizes the most prestigious literary prizes of the region, where the famed writer and novelist had participated as jury. It is also famous his relation with Fidel Castro whom he considers to be “his personal friend”.
